Associate Professor, Critical Race Theory and Education, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
As a product of Portland Public Schools (Vernon Elementary School, Columbia-Whitaker Middle School and US Grant High School/Thomas Jefferson HS music program), I am troubled by the downward spiral of a school system that was once a model for the nation in terms of Per Pupil Expenditure, teacher empowerment and autonomy and the incredible opportunities the system afforded its students in the arts, academics and extracurriculars. Not without its struggles in terms of racial diversity and equity, PPS always strove to be on the cutting-edge of quality and innovative educational programming, especially under the leadership of Dr. Matthew Prophet. I believe in Jamila Singleton-Munson and know that she will fight to return PPS' to its tradition of excellence in educational quality and meaningful innovation.
"Jamila, is what Portland Portland Schools needs in this moment. I am excited to see someone like Jamila running for the school Board, during this moment in history. She is competent, smart, caring and committed to long term change. Jamila is thoughtful and will help bridge Portland. PPS will be better because of her leadership."
"Jamila is an experienced educator who believes in the power of student voice and actions. In her role, she seeks to equip novice teachers entering their first year in their role with the skills they need to be able to deeply engage their students in rigorous, relevant learning. She also ensures that they are challenged to center their work with students on the assets students already bring to the classroom, instead of seeing them as empty vessels, waiting to be filled. I believe Jamila will bring her beliefs about students and the work of teaching and learning to her role as a school board member, and I enthusiastically endorse her for this role."
Director of Educational Equity, The Center for Equity & Inclusion (former PPS teacher and alternative school Principal)
"Jamila is truly one of the most competent, insightful, and experienced educational leaders I know. It is a honor to work alongside her to bring transformative change to our schools. Any time she is at the table, you know the group will push harder, learn more, and really drive towards equitable outcomes that matter for kids and the educators who work so hard to serve them."
